Jomsom Muktinath Trek
Country/Region: Nepal Total Days: 14
Area: Annapurna Total Trek Days:
Activities: Trekking Grade Level:
Season: Spring, Autmn Highest Point: 3802 m

The Jomsom and Muktinath trek is a part of the Annapurna circuit and also probably the single most popular trek in Nepal. The diverse landscapes and cultures to be found along the trek route give a marvelous insight into the way of life of rural Nepalese people. The main feature of the trek is the walk through the gorge carved by the Kali Gandaki River, which carries water from the Tibetan plateau to eventually join the Ganges in India.

The normal starting or ending point is Nayapul about one hour driving from Pokhara. Jomsom is best known for its airport and windy valley that offers quick entry or exit to the valley with the regular daily flight from Pokhara, so there are possibilities of very short to long trek in this region.

Normally trekkers continue on above Jomsom to Mukitnath, the famous pilgrimage site for both Hindu and Buddhist. To Hindu, Muktinath is the scared as the place of salvation. They believe that to wash in the water here guarantees salvation after the death. To the Buddhist it is the place that the great sage Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) meditated at, and to all, it is the source of fossilized ammonites, known locally as shaligrams that are found all along the upper reaches of the Kali Gandaki River valley.
